Knowledge: it's the most important thing available to us as we explore the world. Having been a teacher for 33 years in the elementary school system, I realized that it wasn't important what I taught children. It was important that I taught them how to acquire knowledge for themselves. Informally, I think I've been teaching my entire life. When an individual takes the time to encourage learning or share information with others, they are automatically a teacher - whether it's in a formal institution or casually in life itself. A parent is a person's first teacher. At the moment, my writing is focused on helping others acquire the information they need to eat safely and in a healthy manner. Yesterday, I spent the majority of the day researching rice as an alternative starch to potatoes and flour. I looked at YouTube videos, did some Google searches, and went through materials that I have acquired over the years, in order to find information that I would want to share with people on the new blog on "GG Cooks".
I have an amazing imagination and I'm extremely creative. I love writing fiction. Most of my life has been spent writing non fiction and when I suddenly discovered the world of fiction, I found it very enticing. As a result, I've spent most of the last 10 years switching from writing nonfiction to writing fiction. I love the freedom and the excitement of going down the rabbit hole with an idea or a concept. To me it's so creative and empowering to be able to use that side of my brain to explore everything that's possible and, sometimes, those things that are not possible, and find a way to make them appear possible. Isn't that the job of a fiction writer - to create stories that bend the mind and encourage people to leave reality behind for a few hours while they explored the "what if"? Those experiences make the pain tolerable. They distract me from the here and now where pain overwhelms me minute by minute. Writing fiction allows me to escape into worlds, ideas, concepts, and thoughts that are beyond what we would encounter on a daily basis. This escape fills my life with joy, even if it's only for short bursts of time.
In a way, writing non fiction provides the same kind of excitement for a teacher. The idea that a person is able to excite another individual about acquiring knowledge for themselves provides a distraction that also relieves pain temporarily. Throwing myself into hours of research where I acquire knowledge that ultimately I will share with others, brings me great pleasure. I enjoy that aspect of writing almost as much as the creativity involved in fiction writing, although it's very different. Yesterday, I got so excited by a YouTube video that allowed me to look at the most common, mundane, ordinary thing - rice - from a whole new perspective. It encouraged me to look at other sources of information regarding not only the physical nature and properties of rice but also the potential for adding it to a diet in ways that others might never have considered before. Quickly I found myself on Amazon exploring what different types of rice were available for me to experiment with. Now I can't wait to get into the kitchen, after those products arrive, and start exploring new recipes that I can share with others. The idea behind this new endeavor, this new aspect of my writing, is to encourage others to not only learn about their diet and how it impacts the functioning of their body but also to encourage them to explore their own creativity when it comes to elevating food from the mundane to the gourmet. That's the basis of our branding for the new YouTube series and the slogan "Traditional Cooking for Modern Times". I hope you'll join us on the new web site when it's launched in the very near future.
Best wishes always…
P.S. Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog! My intention is to keep followers up to date on my latest writing adventures. My current focus is on fiction genres including children's picture books and YA/NA historical romanticies. I'm also preparing to write an epic fantasy for the young adult audience. Please consider following me here and on other social media platforms, which you can access on the Home page of my author's web site. I'll be adding more in the weeks to come so please check back from time to time as I add new non-fiction materials to my entries. Thank you so much, in advance, for following my blog. You are potentially helping me enrich the lives of future readers. I just need this break to attract my first agent representation! Your efforts will make all the difference!
